Anglo American’s quarterly copper output fell 5% after record snowfall in Chile. The miner maintained its annual forecast, putting the focus on a stronger finish to the year.

Record snowfall in Chile has disrupted Anglo American’s copper production, putting its recovery plans in focus.

The miner reported third-quarter output of 174,900 tonnes on October 20, down 5% from a year earlier. Production across the first nine months fell 1% to 519,000 tonnes.

Despite the disruption, Anglo maintained its full-year copper forecast of 700,000 to 760,000 tonnes. Higher ore grades at Collahuasi and Quellaveco are expected to support production.

The unchanged outlook places greater importance on the final quarter. Meeting the forecast would demonstrate that stronger operating conditions can offset the earlier disruption.

Investor Take: Copper investors should watch actual production alongside expectations for stronger demand. Weather, ore quality and operating reliability directly affect how much metal producers can sell.

Anglo’s next update will test whether the anticipated recovery is materialising. For shareholders, the financial benefit will also depend on production costs and copper prices: maintaining output guidance alone does not establish how profitable those tonnes will be.
