Boeing has beaten Northrop Grumman for a $20 billion Navy fighter contract. The award expands its defence pipeline, but investors will be watching whether it can deliver two major jet programmes at once.

Boeing has won a $20 billion contract to develop the US Navy’s next-generation fighter jet, beating rival Northrop Grumman.

The award covers development and test aircraft. If the programme moves into full production, its value could grow substantially over the coming decades. Boeing shares rose in premarket trading on Wednesday, while Northrop Grumman shares fell.

A major win with a demanding timetable

The contract gives Boeing a second high-profile fighter programme after it won the Air Force’s F-47 project last year. It also brings fresh work to the company’s defence operations as production of its older Navy fighters winds down.

For investors, the win strengthens Boeing’s long-term defence pipeline. The question now is execution: Boeing must assemble the engineers, suppliers and production capacity to deliver two advanced aircraft programmes. The first production Navy jets are expected in the 2030s, so the contract’s full financial benefit will take years to emerge.
