Mitsubishi is committing another $423 million to Hudbay's Copper World project in Arizona, advancing a major new US copper mine toward production in 2029.

Mitsubishi is increasing its investment in American copper production, committing another $423 million to the Copper World project in Arizona.

The Japanese conglomerate and its Canadian partner, Hudbay Minerals, have formally approved construction of the mine, marking a major step toward bringing new US copper production online.

Mitsubishi's total expected investment now stands at approximately $1.02 billion, including its existing 30% ownership interest.

Located southeast of Tucson, the project is expected to produce approximately 102,000 tonnes of copper annually during its first ten years, with initial production targeted for the second half of 2029.

Copper World carries an estimated initial development cost of $2.07 billion and could become an important domestic supplier as demand grows from electricity networks, data centres and manufacturing.

For Hudbay, the project represents a significant expansion opportunity, with the potential to roughly double its consolidated annual copper production.

Investor Take: Mitsubishi's additional investment provides financial support and strengthens confidence in Copper World's development.

For Hudbay shareholders, the opportunity is substantial, but construction costs and execution risks remain important.

Investors should watch project spending, construction progress and the timeline to first production. Delivering the mine on budget could transform Hudbay's production profile and strengthen its exposure to long-term copper demand.
