Shionogi is paying $2 billion for US drugmaker IntraBio and its approved rare-disease treatment Aqneursa. The investor question is whether future sales can justify the substantial price.

Japan’s Shionogi has agreed to acquire Texas-based IntraBio for $2 billion, adding an approved medicine to its expanding rare-disease business.

The purchase would give Shionogi global rights to Aqneursa, which is approved in the US and Europe for neurological symptoms of Niemann-Pick disease type C. The US Food and Drug Administration also approved it in September for ataxia in patients with Ataxia-Telangiectasia.

An approved drug, an expensive deal

Buying an approved treatment gives Shionogi a product it can sell now, along with opportunities to expand its use. It also makes the commercial question more immediate: how much revenue can Aqneursa generate in diseases that affect relatively small patient groups?

IntraBio reported $67.9 million in net sales for 2025 and an operating loss of $35.3 million. Shionogi is paying for the drug’s future potential as well as its current sales.

The deal is expected to close between November and December, subject to the required approvals. Investors will be watching how quickly Shionogi can grow sales and what the acquisition contributes to earnings.
