SoftBank is raising approximately $11 billion through one of the year’s largest corporate bond sales, using debt markets to finance its expanding investment in OpenAI and the wider artificial intelligence boom.

SoftBank is turning to the bond market to finance its growing artificial intelligence ambitions.

The Japanese investment group has launched approximately $11 billion in dollar- and euro-denominated bonds. Most of the proceeds will fund the next stage of its investment in OpenAI.

The offering includes $10 billion in US dollar bonds and €1 billion in euro bonds, spread across several maturities. If completed as planned, it would become the largest bond sale by a non-financial company in the Asia-Pacific and Japan region.

SoftBank will use the proceeds to replace a $10 billion bridge loan arranged for its upcoming OpenAI payment. That investment tranche is expected to close on October 1.

The transaction demonstrates how much capital is now being committed to artificial intelligence. OpenAI requires enormous funding to develop new models, secure computing capacity and expand its infrastructure.

For SoftBank, the investment could provide substantial exposure to one of the world’s most valuable AI companies. However, financing that position with debt also increases the risk if OpenAI’s growth fails to meet expectations.

Fitch assigned the proposed bonds a BB+ rating. The agency expects SoftBank’s debt to rise but believes the company still has strong liquidity and access to capital markets.

The bond sale also tests investor appetite for financing the AI boom. Strong demand would suggest lenders remain willing to support major technology investments despite uncertainty over when the spending will produce sustainable returns.

SoftBank has repeatedly made large, concentrated bets on emerging technologies. Its latest financing shows that OpenAI now sits at the centre of that strategy.

For investors, the opportunity is significant, but so is the exposure. SoftBank is not simply investing in AI growth. It is placing billions of dollars behind OpenAI’s ability to deliver it.
