Starbucks plans to hire around 800 technology professionals at a new centre in India, strengthening the digital systems behind its global stores, loyalty programme and wider customer experience.

Starbucks plans to hire around 800 technology professionals in India as it strengthens the digital systems supporting its global café network.

The company has signed an agreement to establish a global capability centre in Chennai. The size of the investment has not been disclosed, but the facility is expected to support software development, finance and research.

For investors, the expansion shows how technology is becoming increasingly important to Starbucks’ wider business strategy.

The company may be best known for coffee, but much of its customer experience now depends on digital infrastructure. Mobile ordering, loyalty rewards, personalised promotions, payments and store operations all rely on technology working smoothly behind the scenes.

A dedicated technology centre could give Starbucks greater control over those systems while providing access to India’s large pool of skilled workers.

India has become the world’s largest market for global capability centres, with more than 2,100 facilities employing approximately 2.36 million people. Companies increasingly use these centres for higher-value work, including software engineering, product development and research.

Chennai represents around 10% of India’s capability-centre market. Starbucks technology chief Anand Varadarajan highlighted the city’s skilled workforce, infrastructure and comparatively low employee turnover.

The investment also comes as Starbucks expands its consumer business in India. The company operates approximately 500 cafés through its joint venture with Tata Consumer Products.

However, the new centre is expected to support Starbucks’ wider international operations rather than focus only on its Indian stores.

For investors, the key question is whether the expansion can improve efficiency and customer engagement. Stronger digital systems could increase loyalty, support more personalised offers and help stores operate more effectively.

The Chennai centre will not transform Starbucks on its own. It does, however, show that technology is becoming a more important part of how the company plans to improve its global business.
