Syndax’s failed lung fibrosis trial removes a potential expansion opportunity. Investors now face greater reliance on the approved treatment’s sales and remaining studies evaluating its use earlier in care.

Syndax has lost a potential growth opportunity after its lung fibrosis programme suffered a clinical setback.

The company announced Monday that its Phase 2 MAXPIRe trial of axatilimab missed its main effectiveness endpoint. It will stop developing the drug for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

No new safety signals were identified, and studies in other conditions continue.

Remaining programmes take centre stage

Axatilimab is already approved for certain patients with chronic graft-versus-host disease, a serious complication that can follow a stem cell transplant.

Syndax continues to study its use earlier in treatment. Further results from that programme are expected later this year and in early 2028.

The setback places greater weight on the approved treatment’s sales and the remaining trials as drivers of future growth.

Investor takeaway: Investors should reassess any lung fibrosis revenue expectations included in their valuation of Syndax. Watch commercial sales and upcoming trial results for evidence that the remaining programme can expand the drug’s market. Each study must establish effectiveness in its target patients, making those results important tests of the growth outlook.
