A deepening technology sell-off is putting growth-stock valuations under pressure. Hotter US inflation raises the hurdle for AI-linked companies, making earnings guidance, cash flow and portfolio concentration increasingly important for investors.

Technology investors face a tougher combination: persistent inflation, elevated bond yields and growing scrutiny of AI spending.

Asian markets fell sharply on Thursday after September US inflation reached 3.7%, up from 3.4% in August. South Korea’s Kospi dropped 7.9%, while Japan’s Nikkei fell 5%.

The slide followed Wednesday’s 1.9% Nasdaq decline and 1.1% fall in the S&P 500.

Growth expectations face a higher hurdle

Higher interest rates can weigh heavily on growth stocks because more of their expected profits lie years ahead. When bond yields rise, investors can demand a greater return to justify holding those shares.

That creates a demanding backdrop for AI companies already valued on expectations of rapid expansion. Strong earnings may help, but investors will also want evidence that customers’ spending plans can translate into sustainable profits.

Investor Take: Watch how companies respond through earnings guidance, capital spending plans and cash-flow forecasts. Those updates will help distinguish businesses maintaining their growth from those struggling to meet expectations.

For US investors, the sell-off also highlights portfolio concentration. Several holdings across chips, cloud computing and technology funds can respond to the same shift in AI sentiment, increasing exposure to a single theme.
