Tesla put its purpose-built robotaxi on the road this week. The Cybercab - a two-seat electric cab with butterfly doors and nothing for a human to drive, joined the company’s Robotaxi app in Austin after an invite-only launch.
The official teaser says it plainly: The Future Has Arrived.
Rides sit alongside the driverless Model Ys already working the city. You tap a destination; the nearest empty Cybercab comes to you. Tesla says the wider unsupervised Robotaxi programme has now passed a million miles. Texas has only registered a few dozen of the new cars so far, so this is a first shift, not a flood.
The bet is simple. Strip out the driver, the wheel and the pedals, and a taxi becomes a moving lounge. Whether Austin treats it as the future, or just another two-seat experiment starts now.
Tesla’s longer pitch is that this is not just a ride you take — it is an asset you can put to work. The company has already floated buying a Cybercab as a fleet vehicle, with a target price under $30,000 and an app that can send it out when you are not in it. In theory the returns are straightforward: no driver wages, high utilisation, cheap electrons instead of petrol, and a network that assigns the next fare. In practice the money only shows up if the cars stay busy, stay legal, stay cheap to insure and do not sit idle between rides.
Austin is the first real test of that spreadsheet, not proof of it.
