A £43 million Cornwall lithium facility has received an offer of nearly £10 million in UK government support. Production is planned for 2029, leaving funding approval and commercial execution as the key tests.

Britain is putting public funding behind another domestic lithium project, giving its battery supply ambitions a more concrete test.

Geothermal Engineering Limited plans to invest around £43 million in a Cornwall facility that will extract lithium from underground geothermal brine. The project has received an offer in principle of nearly £10 million through a UK government programme supporting the automotive supply chain.

Commercial production is expected to begin in 2029. At that stage, the facility is projected to produce roughly 1,500 tonnes of technical-grade lithium carbonate a year.

For investors, the significant point is the move from discussing domestic resources to financing a production facility. Lithium is an essential battery material, and a local supply could become valuable to manufacturers seeking more reliable sources.

The project is still at an early stage. The government’s funding offer requires due diligence and final approval, while the planned output remains several years away. Construction, operating costs and eventual demand will determine whether the facility becomes commercially competitive.

The next milestones are finalising the funding and showing that the extraction process can work at the planned scale.
