Ultragenyx has agreed to sell an FDA priority review voucher for $203 million. The potential cash injection offers funding without new shares, putting closing, spending and progress towards profitability in focus.

Ultragenyx has found another way to raise substantial cash without selling more shares.

The biotech announced on October 14 that it has agreed to sell an FDA rare pediatric disease priority review voucher for $203 million. The voucher came with approval of FAYUVI, its treatment for Sanfilippo syndrome Type A.

Turning an approval into capital

The FDA programme rewards qualifying rare pediatric disease approvals with vouchers that can accelerate review of another marketing application. Companies can use them or sell them to another developer.

Ultragenyx said the proceeds would support its rare-disease work and its objective of reaching profitability.

The transaction remains subject to closing conditions, including the applicable antitrust waiting period. The agreement therefore represents expected funding, with completion still ahead.

Investor Take: A voucher sale can help reduce reliance on financing that dilutes existing shareholders. Its lasting value depends on how effectively that cash supports development and commercial growth.

Watch for confirmation of closing, updated cash guidance and operating spending. The proceeds provide financial flexibility; recurring product revenue will determine how sustainable that position becomes.
