Visa Takes a Major Step Towards China’s Payments Market

Visa has cleared an important hurdle towards entering China’s domestic payments market. Final licensing and customer adoption will determine how much the expansion can contribute to future growth.

Visa’s long wait to enter China’s domestic card-clearing market has moved forward.
China’s central bank has approved the company’s application to begin preparing a local operation. Visa has one year to complete that work before applying for an operating licence, which requires another regulatory review.
A new growth opportunity
For shareholders, the attraction is access to one of the world’s largest payments markets. Turning that access into meaningful earnings will require Visa to build relationships and win business against established competitors, including UnionPay.
The milestone gives investors a concrete development to follow. Final approval, launch costs and customer adoption will help determine how much value the expansion can create.
