YouTube’s Shopping Push Has a Number Investors Should Watch

YouTube is taking its shopping affiliate programme to 35 countries after reporting rapid growth in goods sold through it. Investors still need to know how much of that activity becomes revenue for Alphabet.

YouTube wants a larger role in what happens after someone watches a product review. It plans to expand its shopping affiliate programme to 35 countries by year-end, letting more creators earn commissions by tagging products in videos, livestreams and Shorts.

For Alphabet investors, the opportunity is clear: YouTube already has viewers researching what to buy. Product tags could help turn that attention into purchases while giving creators another reason to build their businesses on the platform.

Big growth, with one missing figure

YouTube says more than 1.3 million creators are in the affiliate programme and that the value of goods sold through it has grown 13-fold over two years. It is also adding tools to show viewers offers relevant to their country.

Those figures show growing use. They do not reveal how much revenue shopping generates for YouTube, how profitable it is, or whether it is large enough to change Alphabet’s results. The 13-fold figure describes merchandise value, not money retained by the company.

That is the investor angle to follow as the programme expands. Can YouTube convert creator recommendations into a meaningful business of its own? Growth in tagged purchases is a promising sign; disclosed revenue and profit would be stronger proof.
