A new agreement between Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Kairos Power highlights growing momentum behind microreactors. As AI drives electricity demand higher, investors are increasingly focused on advanced nuclear technologies that could help power next-generation data centres and critical infrastructure.



As artificial intelligence drives electricity demand to record highs, the search for reliable, around-the-clock power is accelerating and one of the industry's smallest technologies could play an increasingly important role.


Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has signed an agreement with advanced nuclear developer Kairos Power to explore building a prototype microreactor at the Berkeley campus, marking another step forward for next-generation nuclear energy in the United States.


While the agreement does not authorize construction, it allows both organisations to begin evaluating the site's suitability, regulatory requirements, and technical feasibility. If successful, the project could become an important demonstration of how microreactors may support future energy needs.


Unlike traditional nuclear power stations that generate enough electricity for hundreds of thousands of homes, microreactors are designed to produce a fraction of that output. Their smaller size makes them suitable for locations where large-scale reactors are impractical, including research facilities, military bases, industrial sites, remote communities, and potentially even data centres.


That last application is attracting growing investor interest.


The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence has created an unprecedented demand for electricity as technology companies invest billions of dollars into new data centres. Supplying those facilities with reliable, carbon-free power has become one of the industry's biggest challenges, leading utilities and technology companies to explore a range of energy solutions including advanced nuclear reactors.


Microreactors offer several potential advantages. They can provide continuous electricity regardless of weather conditions, require a much smaller footprint than conventional nuclear plants, and could eventually be manufactured using modular techniques that reduce construction times and costs.


Kairos Power is among several companies developing advanced reactor technologies aimed at making nuclear energy safer, more flexible, and easier to deploy. The company has attracted growing support as interest in next-generation nuclear power continues to rise across both the public and private sectors.


For investors, the Berkeley agreement is less about one prototype reactor and more about the direction of travel. The United States continues to build momentum behind advanced nuclear technologies as policymakers, researchers, and private companies search for new ways to meet rising electricity demand.


While commercial deployment of microreactors is still several years away, each research partnership, regulatory milestone, and demonstration project moves the technology closer to real-world adoption.


As AI continues to reshape the global economy, the race to build the infrastructure that powers it is becoming just as important as the software itself. For many investors, that means the future of artificial intelligence may depend not only on faster chips but also on the next generation of nuclear energy.
