Woodside Lands 20-Year QatarEnergy Deal for Louisiana LNG

Woodside secured a 20-year QatarEnergy purchase agreement for Louisiana LNG. The contract strengthens future sales visibility, while construction costs and delivery schedules remain central to the investment case.

Woodside has secured a major customer for its Louisiana LNG project, strengthening the commercial case for a large American energy investment.
QatarEnergy has agreed to purchase liquefied natural gas under a 20-year contract, with deliveries anticipated to begin in 2030. The agreement will eventually supply 3 million tonnes annually.
QatarEnergy said the purchase expands its global supply and trading portfolio and makes it the largest buyer of US LNG. The company described the agreement as part of its strategy to diversify supply and meet long-term customer demand.
For Woodside, the agreement helps secure buyers for its $17.5 billion Louisiana development. The facility is designed to produce 16.5 million tonnes annually, with first LNG targeted for 2029.
Supply to QatarEnergy will begin with the project’s second production train, rising to the full contracted volume when the third starts operating. The deal also provides QatarEnergy with supply outside the Gulf amid disruption to its own production.
Our assessment is that the contract improves visibility over future sales, although deliveries remain several years away. A long-term customer commitment supports the project’s commercial position; construction progress and operating costs will determine how that translates into returns.
Investor Take: The agreement is a meaningful customer win for Woodside and a sign of demand for American LNG. Shareholders should watch construction milestones, remaining capacity sales and capital spending. Securing a buyer reduces one uncertainty, while delivering the project on time and within budget remains the next major test.
