As demand for critical minerals accelerates, a new report suggests one of the industry's biggest obstacles isn't finding resources it's bringing new mines into production. For

investors, project timelines are becoming just as important as the minerals themselves.



The global race to secure critical minerals is accelerating, driven by growing demand from artificial intelligence, data centres, electric vehicles, defence technologies, and modern energy infrastructure.


But according to a new report from PwC Canada, one of the biggest challenges facing the industry isn't a lack of resources it's the time it takes to develop new mines.


The report estimates that mine development in Canada now averages around 20 years, highlighting how lengthy permitting and development timelines can delay new supplies of copper, nickel, lithium, and rare earth elements at a time when demand continues to grow.


While the findings focus on Canada, the implications extend across North America. The United States has made securing domestic and allied supplies of critical minerals a strategic priority, making the speed at which new mines reach production an increasingly important factor for manufacturers and investors alike.


Long development timelines can increase financing costs, expose projects to changing commodity prices, and delay returns for investors. PwC estimates that more than C$11 billion in nationally significant mining projects could be at risk if project timelines are not improved.


For investors, the report reinforces a broader trend across the mining industry. As demand for critical minerals continues to rise, companies with producing mines or advanced-stage projects may hold a competitive advantage over projects that remain years away from production.


The report also highlights an important shift in how mining projects are being evaluated. While the size and quality of a mineral deposit remain critical, the ability to move a project efficiently from discovery to production is becoming an increasingly valuable asset.


As the United States continues working to strengthen critical mineral supply chains with trusted partners, bringing new production online quickly may prove just as important as discovering the next major deposit.


In the race to supply the materials powering tomorrow's technologies, speed is becoming a competitive advantage.
